Trump inspired conspiracy theories is a quickly growing movement in the Republican Party base. 28% of Republicans believe that “There is a storm coming soon that will sweep away the elites in power and restore the rightful leaders,” and “Because things have gotten so far off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country,” Rep. In blocking the formation of an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Republicans in Congress have all but closed off the possibility of a full and impartial accounting for one of the most serious assaults on American democracy in history, leaving unanswered critical questions with broad implications for politics, security and public trust.
